I have been crocheting a bit off and on since my nanny taught me to when I was a young girl. I learned to crochet on my finger, no hook required, in the Brownies. I was in kindergarten. I was hooked! Ha, no pun intended. But, that little bit of yarn they gave me that night in the Brownies meeting just wasn't enough. My nanny gave me a big ball of yarn, I chain crocheted, on my finger, the whole thing. Nanny said it was time to put a hook in my hand. She being right handed, me being left handed, sat me across from her and taught me to crochet, again, a very long chain stitch. Than the lesson went on to granny squares, I was a granny square making fool at a very young age.
God bless my nanny. She also taught me to knit, which I never really got the hang of, and to cross stitch.
So, back to the ruffle scarf. I watched the video, and started crocheting my scarf, with not much success. It was growing in length, and it was ruffling, but it just didn't look, or feel, right to me, it was much too tight. I dropped it down in my bag and didn't pick it up again for several months.
Just before Prayer Weavers were to meet again after the summer break, I went to Joann Fabrics, http://www.joann.com/ and bought a pair of knitting needles. Eileen was telling me that the scarf was very easy to make, which it wasn't crocheting, so I thought I'd try knitting it. I was going to need help getting started, I had not knit in years, many years. Eileen got me started, I was doing it, but it didn't feel right. As I left the meeting, I had decided I still couldn't get the hang of knitting, would pull that out, and try crocheting the scarf again. I was knitting, in my mind as I drove home. What was wrong? I believed I was doing it backwards, or right handed, the yarn was in the wrong hand from the way I crochet, but I still wasn't sure which hand it should be in to knit. I did pull it out when I got home. But, I was bound and determined to not give up. I went to Google. Searched Ruffle Scarfs. Oh my word! So many different ways to make them. I watched several videos till I found one like the way Eileen was teaching me. Yep! I just needed to knit left handed. Got it started and finished the scarf in two evenings. I was thrilled with the end product and couldn't wait to start the next scarf!
But, I also wanted to talk about it. Hmmm, should I tweet about it, or actually start a blog? I, obviously chose the blog. Here it is, my first blog entry. I don't know how far this will go, but my hopes are that I can help inspire and teach others in whatever I can. I believe I am the Jack of all trades, master of none, in the world of crafts. I love making things and am always on the look out to learn to make something new.
If you have stumbled on to my blog, I hope you have enjoyed reading my first entry, will bear with me as I learn the world of blogging, and join me in creating new projects.
Ruffle Scarfs are created by using the Sashay yarn. It looks like ribbon, or narrow strips on the skein, but as you unroll it, you open the strips to find a woven mesh that has a narrow band on the top and a wider, metallic band on the bottom. OH! I will have to take a picture of that and post it.
My first scarf complete!

The label from the skein.
